Issey Miyake is the founder of the Miyake Design Studio which is an experimental laboratory for Japanese fashion based in France. Issey Miyake himself is Japanese yet much of his career has played out in France, including stints with both Givenchy and Guy Laroche. A survivor and witness of the devastating Hiroshima bombing in 1945, Issey Miyake settled in France after his graduation in 1964 and it’s this fusing of two cultures which attributes to a unique handwriting, one that seeks to challenge traditional dressmaking approaches. Previous explorations have included the relationship between clothes and the wearer in a concept known as ‘One Piece of Cloth’. He also frequently experiments with innovative materials like paper, plastic, grass and plastic making him one of today’s most industrial apparel and fragrance designers.
Miyake is famed for fusing humour and multi-lingual puns into his fragrances. In fact, the now retired designer still maintains a fragrance store in Japan that stocks all of his scents. The name of the store is ELTTOB TEP (which is ‘pet bottle’ spelled backward).
His debut perfume L’Eau d’Issey is crafted to have a light floral-aquatic scent specifically for females. The name literally translates to ‘water’, extremely apt since Miyake cites water as both his greatest material and his greatest source of inspiration. This fragrance was introduced in 1992 with a bottle that boosts the Eiffel Tower and the moon as its muse. It had a remarkable influence on the world of perfume and still remains one of the world’s best-selling fragrances.
This innovation was followed 6 years later with L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme in 2004. Described as evoking the “the feeling of freshness and strength of a mountain waterfall”. It was so well received that just 2 years L’Eau Bleue d’Issey, a woody aromatic fragrance for men, was released. While the first fragrance is famed for citrus top notes, the later boosts more a powerful and darker scent.
Other famed fragrances which feature in the Miyake portfolio include Drop on a Petal, Reflections in a Drop, L’Eau d’Issey Absolue, Issey Miyake Nuit d’Issey Bleu Astral, Issey Miyake L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme Summer, Pure and L’eau Majeure.
Early 2018, will see the launch of a new fragrance christened as L’Eau d’Issey Pure Nectar de Perfum. This new flanker represents a bottle drop of blossoming flower nectar.
